Spring in Fulham means longer evenings, open windows, and — if you are anything like most households — the realisation that winter left your home in need of a proper reset. A spring clean is not just about making things look tidy. Done properly, it removes allergens that built up over the colder months, addresses areas skipped in regular cleaning, and gives your home a genuinely fresh start.
This is the complete checklist. Work through it room by room, tick as you go, and you will end up with a home that feels noticeably different.
Before You Start: What You Need
Cleaning products:
- All-purpose cleaner
- Bathroom and limescale remover
- Glass cleaner
- Bicarbonate of soda
- White vinegar
- Washing-up liquid

Equipment:
- Microfibre cloths — at least 6, you will go through them

- A step ladder for high areas
- Rubber gloves
- A squeegee for windows and shower glass
- Old toothbrushes for grout and tight spots
| TIME GUIDE | Allow a full day for a 2-bedroom flat. A full weekend for a larger house. Do not rush — the value is in the thoroughness. |
Kitchen — Allow 2–3 Hours
The kitchen accumulates more hidden grime than any other room. Most of it is invisible until you start looking.
Appliances:
- Clean oven fully inside and out — racks, base, walls, door glass, and door seal
- Degrease hob — all rings, surrounding surface, and underneath the hob tray
- Clean inside the microwave — steam a bowl of water with lemon for 5 minutes first
- Empty, clean, and defrost the fridge — remove all shelves and drawers, wash separately
- Wipe inside and outside the dishwasher, run an empty hot cycle with a cleaner tablet
- Clean inside and outside the washing machine — run a hot 90° empty cycle with bicarbonate
- Descale the kettle with white vinegar or a descaling tablet
- Clean the toaster — empty the crumb tray, wipe exterior
Surfaces and storage:
- Empty all cupboards and wipe shelves inside
- Degrease all cupboard doors and handles — especially nearest the hob
- Clean behind and underneath the fridge and washing machine
- Descale the sink and taps fully — limescale builds quickly with London hard water
- Clean the extractor fan filter — remove and soak in hot soapy water, or replace
- Wipe down all walls and tiles — especially above and behind the hob
- Clean skirting boards, light switches, and plug sockets
Floor:
- Pull appliances out and clean the floor underneath
- Mop with a suitable cleaner for your floor type
Bathroom — Allow 1–2 Hours
Limescale and grout:
- Descale shower head, taps, and shower rail — soak in white vinegar for 30–60 minutes
- Clean shower glass or curtain — limescale on glass and mould on curtain seals are specifically noted on checkout reports
- Clean shower tray or bath — remove all limescale and soap scum
- Regrout or use a grout pen on discoloured lines — makes more visual difference than almost anything else
- Descale taps, basin, and bath
- Clean toilet fully including under the rim, behind the cistern, and around the base
Overlooked areas:
- Wipe extractor fan cover — remove and wash off dust build-up
- Clean bathroom cabinet shelves inside and out — dispose of expired products
- Wash or replace the bath mat
- Wipe all wall tiles including high areas above the shower
- Clean skirting boards and the gap between bath panel and floor
Living Room — Allow 1–2 Hours
Upholstery and soft furnishings:
- Vacuum all sofa and armchair surfaces including underneath cushions — remove covers and wash if machine washable
- Steam clean sofa fabric if you have a fabric steamer — removes odours and embedded dust
- Vacuum curtains or send for cleaning if heavily dusty
- Clean blinds — wipe each slat individually with a damp cloth
Hard surfaces:
- Dust and polish all furniture including undersides of shelves and tops of bookcases
- Clean all picture frames, mirrors, and wall art
- Wipe down windowsills inside and out — these accumulate dust and condensation residue
- Clean light switches, remote controls, and frequently touched surfaces with a disinfectant wipe
- Dust and wipe all light fittings and lampshades
Floors:
- Move furniture and vacuum underneath — sofas accumulate significant dust below
- Clean skirting boards the full length of the room
- Deep clean carpet if needed
Bedrooms — Allow 1 Hour Each
Bedding and mattress:
- Wash all bedding including duvet, pillows, and mattress protector on a hot cycle
- Vacuum the mattress thoroughly on both sides using the upholstery attachment
- Treat any stains on the mattress with a bicarbonate paste — leave for 1 hour then vacuum off
- Flip or rotate the mattress if it is a double-sided model
Wardrobe and storage:
- Empty wardrobe fully — sort clothes for donation or disposal
- Vacuum inside the wardrobe floor and wipe shelves
- Clean the top of the wardrobe — one of the most dust-heavy surfaces in any bedroom
General:
- Vacuum under the bed thoroughly
- Wipe all bedside surfaces, lamps, and charging points
- Clean mirrors and glass furniture
- Dust and wipe skirting boards
Hallway and Stairs — 30–45 Minutes
- Clean the front door inside and outside, including door frame and letterbox
- Wipe down the banister and spindles
- Vacuum and wash the stair carpet, or clean hard stair treads individually
- Wipe light fittings and any wall lights
- Wipe down coat hooks, shoe storage, and any hall furniture
- Vacuum and mop the floor, including the corner by the front door
High Areas That Are Always Missed
| WHY | These areas get missed during routine cleaning all year and make a significant difference to how the home feels and smells when done properly. |
- Ceiling corners and coving — cobwebs and dust settle here year-round
- The top of door frames — run a damp cloth along every internal door frame
- Light fittings throughout the house — dust on bulbs is a fire hazard as well as unsightly
- Behind radiators — significant dust that circulates through the room when heating runs
- Inside the airing cupboard — can harbour mould if there is moisture
- Window tracks and runners — wipe out the grooves, which fill with dirt and debris
The Correct Cleaning Order
If you tackle rooms in the wrong order you will create more work for yourself:
- Declutter first — before any cleaning begins, remove items that do not belong in each room
- Top to bottom within each room — ceilings, walls, surfaces, then floors. Dust falls down.
- Dry before wet — dust and vacuum before mopping or wet wiping
- Wet rooms first — bathrooms and kitchen before bedrooms and living rooms
- Floors last in every room — you will dirty the floor while moving around during the clean
The Fulham Option
A full spring clean is genuinely satisfying when it is done. But it is also a full day of physical work. Many Fulham households prefer to hand it over — either the whole thing or just the specialist parts like oven cleaning, carpet cleaning, or a one-off deep clean before switching to regular maintenance visits.
Maid in Fulham offers one-off deep cleaning services across Fulham, Parsons Green, Chelsea, Hammersmith, Clapham, and Battersea. We bring all equipment and products, work to a comprehensive checklist, and leave the home in a state that would take a full weekend to achieve yourself.
